Creating Safe Schools for All Children

Intended Impact

The Alabama Rainbow Project is an initiative created by Angela Stowe and Glenda Elliott as a result of identifying a growing need for advocacy for sexual minority youth.  The project is designed to directly impact all students in Alabama Schools by targeting the counselors and administrators and challenging them to make school environments safe for everyone.
 
The efforts of the Alabama Rainbow Project are designed to result in the following:
 
1)  School environments safe from harassment, discrimination and violence regarding sexual minority ussues including homophobia, heterosexism and internalized homophobia, and
 
2) School counselors and administrators who are educated and competent in dealing with sexual minority issues that arise at school

Our Objectives:

  • Educate counselors & administrators about issues related to providing safe schools and implementing strategies necessary to changing attitudes of homophobia, heterosexism and internalized homophobia
  • Advocate for the rights of sexual minority youth to be free from harassment and discrimination in school environments
  • Train counselors and school administrators with skills needed to address concerns related to sexual minority youth
  • Equip counselors, administrators, students, educators and parents wtih accurent, current and pertinent information regarding sexual minority issues
