Meet the Founders

Alabama Rainbow Project was developed as a result of a growing need for individuals working with GLBT youth to be informed and aware of important issues facing our schools regarding providing a climate of safety and respect for all students.

Glenda Elliott, Ph.D.
Licensed Professional Counselor

Dr. Elliott is Associate Professor Emerita for the Department of Human Studies Counseling Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Glenda is an advocacy counselor, working with school systems and universities to provide safe spaces for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students.  She spear-headed the effort to create a Safe Zone program at UAB which trains faculty, staff and student volunteers to provide safe spaces for GLBT individuals at the University.  She also spends a great deal of time providing workshops and presentations to community groups and school systems regarding GLBT issues.

Angela Stowe, Ph.D.
Licensed Professional Counselor

Angela Stowe is a counselor and intern supervisor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Student Counseling & Wellness Center.  Since working at UAB, she has participated actively with the Safe Zone program, serving as a member of the training team and as an Advisory Board member.  She has researched issues regarding "at risk" concerns for GLBT youth and presents regularly with Glenda Elliott.
